Artist Statement
In my mind’s eye, my medium of choice is the figure. The materials I use, oil paint, ink, charcoal, carvings, are all means to a singular end: finding a resolution in the ever present problem in art history—conveying the human body. Where I differ in this long-established artistic inquiry is the stopping point. Unlike some of my male predecessors, my end goal is not just a representation of the politely docile, visually enticing pink nude, or a subservient object that falls quietly under the male gaze. My work searches deeper into the unearthing of a soul within the subject, the person that is woman.
I depict the contemporary figure as something that is both powerful and, at times, confrontational as I explore the paradoxical dualities in the process of understanding what it is to navigate the world from a societally-gendered female body while investigating the political ramifications of a patriarchal society. I am curious as to the effects of inequality on the flesh, how it has impacted the stories of a diverse gamut of women and what it is to break free from internalized misogyny.
My work draws from events and themes that impact my life; personal, spiritual and political that stems from my Catholic upbringing in one of the most conservative regions of the country. I have the unique view as a person who grew up adjacent to the fashion industry, as a sister of a life long model. My life experiences and questions greatly impact my imagery. It is by creation that I am able to come to terms with ideas and life events alike. By making art I find both visual and conceptual resolutions.
