White Washed was inspired by the BLM protests that erupted in the summer of 2020. I was moved by both what I saw and the images that were captured. I was moved by photographs captured of protesters post tear gas emissions as milk was poured onto their faces. Though, in reality this did not aid in their ailment, I found this imagery drew parallels between important discussions being held across the country about race, violence and intersectionality. I invited friends to share with me their stories as women of color via interview and worked with them to create these paintings seen above. During our discussions we dove into what their personal stories were and what it was liked to see their cultures white washed in America. It is an on going project as I try to weave the audio recordings of their interviews with the visual element of large scale paintings.
